New VTCT Beauty, Make-up & Nails Training in Stoke

Three of the team here at Acacia Training are behind the launch of a new beauty, make-up and nail training academy opening in Hanley this weekend.

Foundations Nail and Beauty Academy will offer the chance for people to retrain, boost their business or advance their beauty careers in just six months.

We are inviting local people to call in to a launch event at the new training salon in Market Lane, Hanley on Saturday 28th January between 10am and 3pm.

People who work in the beauty or nail industry or those who own their own business are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone who would love to train for a new career as a beauty therapist, make-up artist or nail technician.

We are offering a complimentary glass of fizz as well as the chance to receive advice about the fast track VTCT qualifications in Nail Technology, Make-up Artistry, and Beauty Massage. Existing professionals can also find out about the chance to expand their treatment range by studying individual units such as nail art, manicures, pedicures, face and body art, media make up and a range of massage treatments.

The new business has been founded by Acacia Training’s managing director Vikki Silvester, husband Ryan Silvester and colleague Julie Arrowsmith, both of whom hold senior roles here at Acacia. Acacia has a good Ofsted rating and delivers government funded qualifications throughout the UK.

Vikki comments: “We’ve been delivering government funded training for many years. Recently we’ve identified a demand within the nail and beauty industry for people who want to develop their skills in a more flexible, responsive way that they can enrol on all year round, and complete within six months.”

She continues: “Foundations Nail and Beauty Academy will provide all those things as well as enabling existing professionals to expand their range of services by completing individual units.

For example, a beauty massage therapist can learn how to do nail acrylics, or someone who does nails can learn how to do make-up. There are more than 7 units in each qualification and these can be studied as standalone certificates or all 7 units can be completed within just six months.”

Training at the salon will be delivered by two experienced beauty therapists and training assessors who until very recently worked at Alton Towers Resort Spa.

Potential students can choose whether to pay up front for the course or take a government-backed learner loan, with repayments commencing after their annual salary reaches £21,000 or above.

For more information or to enquire about courses, go along to the event on Saturday 28th January at Foundations Nail and Beauty Academy, 2-4 Market Lane, Hanley, visit their website, find them on facebook at www.facebook.com/FoundationsBeauty and on twitter at @FoundationsNail

More than 59,000 employers were asked to respond to the FE Choices employer satisfaction survey, which captures perceptions on the quality and responsiveness of training provided by 566 different colleges and training organisations. More than 130 of Acacia Training’s clients took part in the survey, awarding us a 98.5% employer satisfaction rating that placed us in the top 30 colleges and training providers out of 566 nationwide.

We’d like to say a massive THANK YOU to all our wonderful clients in care homes, domiciliary care, nurseries, pre-schools and other childcare settings for taking the time to respond to the survey and for all your support. Our managing director Victoria Sylvester says: “We pride ourselves on being a flexible and pro-active training provider working closely with care sector employers to identify and respond to their training needs. Most importantly, we ensure that our training has a direct impact on improved quality of care and standards in health, social care and childcare settings.

Free Safeguarding Training Resources For Health and Social Care Providers

Free Safeguarding Training ResourcesAre you an organisation who is looking for free safeguarding training resources for your team?

Bradford Council has developed ‘Real Safeguarding Stories’, which are free safeguarding training resources. They have created a series of online awareness videos and content that outline the issues around safeguarding.

These online videos are easy to use and can be streamed direct from the website, so there is no need to download them to your device.

Some of the topics that the free safeguarding training resources cover include:

  • Vulnerable Children
  • Vulnerable Adults
  • Knife Crime
  • Drug Use
  • Domestic Abuse

The online videos produced by Real Safeguarding Stories are aimed to provide training and increase awareness around safeguarding issues. The organisation also host regular awareness events to spread their message further.

What is Safeguarding?

One of the main questions that people want to know the answer to is, what is safeguarding?. Simply put Safeguarding is aimed at protecting people, particularly those who are vulnerable such as children, young people and vulnerable adults so that they can live free from abuse, harm and neglect.

Why is Safeguarding Important?

Safeguarding is such an important topic throughout the UK. As such the government has set out some principles of safeguarding that can help to protect people.

The principles are:

  • empowerment – people should be supported to make their own decisions based on the best possible information
  • prevention – it is better to take action before harm occurs
  • proportionality – what we do should be proportionate to the risk: we don’t want to be over-protective if the risk is low, as this in itself can disadvantage people and deprive of them of the opportunity to make their own decisions
  • protection – those in greatest need require our support and protection
  • partnership – safeguarding is about different people, professions, groups and communities working together to cover all the angles in preventing, detecting and reporting neglect and abuse
  • accountability – as in all our activities as health care assistants, we need to be accountable for what we do in safeguarding.

What does Safeguarding mean?

As already covered Safeguarding is aimed at protecting people. However, the next question is what does safeguarding mean to you? This is where these free courses can be useful. If you would like to expand your knowledge further, you may like to attend a Safeguarding event or complete some safeguarding training.

Do you want to develop skills based on what these free safeguarding training resources show?

As a specialist training provider, we understand the importance of you or your staff having the appropriate training for the specialist skills required for safeguarding.

We can offer Safeguarding training at your site across the UK, even delivering training in twilight hours.

Our specialist safeguarding training covers everywhere from the North East to South West and London. Our Head Office being based in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire where we can also deliver training.

Care company creates skills gap role

Skills gaps are a big issue in care homes. But not for Acacia Training’s clients.

A recent article in The Guardian highlighted the approach that our client, HC-One, is taking to bridge skills gaps in health and social care through the introduction of training and new ‘Nursing Assistant’ roles.

The Guardian featured HC-One employee Sarah Todd, previously a senior care assistant who undertook training such as giving medicines, checking blood pressure and replacing simple dressings as part of her training to become a nursing assistant.

Nine months later, Sarah was promoted from nursing assistant to Care Home manager, showing that training can help with career progression as well as leading to higher standards of care.

We are working with HC-One on the recruitment of more than 150 apprentice carers across the East and West Midlands. Through a 3-year development programme, these new recruits will undertake extensive on-the-job training in order to reach the role of nursing assistant.

Acacia Training works with care and childcare providers to deliver mandatory training and short courses, as well as work-based training to ensure staff are trained regularly. Our Skills for Care accreditation recognises that the training we deliver clearly and directly achieves better standards of care in homes, domiciliary care and health and social care settings.

Sarah is quoted in the article: “Usually it’s nurses who become managers, but after this extra training I felt confident enough to look after a home – I know what the nurses are talking about and I feel confident if I have to challenge them. I just wouldn’t have felt I could do that before as a senior care worker.”

Health Watchdog suggests whistle-blower helpline to improve standard of care

Over in Northern Ireland, The Health Watchdog is recommending the introduction of a new confidential employee helpline to improve quality standards in the care sector. They believe a confidential helpline will help to reassure employees that there is a mechanism in place to report concerns about the standards of care they witness in their place of work.

What do you think? Is there a need for this in the UK? We have worked in the care sector for many years and we are proud to work with employers and care companies who are absolutely committed to providing the highest standards of care.

However if you are concerned about the quality of care your employees are providing, Acacia can help by delivering a wide range of formal qualifications, bespoke training, online learning and short courses to help deliver a continuously high standard of care.

Find out more here  or contact our partnerships team for a confidential consultation about your training needs in health care, social care or child care.

Diabetes Training: New diabetes figures show lifestyle choices are to blame

Public Health England (PHE) has unveiled new figures showing almost 4m people in England have diabetes – highlighting the huge strain faced by the health and social care services as a result.

According to PHE, approximately 90% of diabetes cases are Type 2 and can be prevented through an adjustment in the way people live. Helping people to understand how lifestyle choices could impact their health later in life could prevent developing illnesses and diseases. Read the full news article here

Apprentices celebrate success with graduation

Acacia Training apprentices from Staffordshire recently celebrated their accomplishments at Staffordshire’s Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony, held at the County Showground near Stafford.

Staffordshire-based Acacia Training is a high quality training company specialising in fully funded and bespoke training for the childcare and health and social care sector.

Amongst those graduating were students studying Higher Apprenticeships in the management of care home and childcare settings, which offer degree level study through work based learning.

Managing Director Victoria Sylvester comments: “Acacia Training apprentices work hard to complete and balance their qualification whilst gaining industry experience and therefore deserve to celebrate with a graduation ceremony.

She adds: “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the success of apprentices. They all work so hard and deserve a special day – we’d like to see all our apprentices celebrating their achievements throughout the UK.”

Would your employees benefit from apprenticeships in care, early years or leadership and management? Or could you grow your workforce by working with Acacia to recruit and train apprentice carers, just like HC-One? Find out more here or call our partnerships team on 01782 646346 to find out how we can help.

IT’S A MYTH! SCHOOL AND COLLEGE LEAVERS DO WANT A CAREER IN CARE!

2.4m jobs are to be made available by 2025 to meet the demand of the care sector. Attracting a new generation of school leavers, college and university graduates is key to the industry’s growth and quality standards, according to Skills for Care.

Skills for Care are running a myth-busting campaign to address the common misconception that ‘young people don’t want to work in the care sector’. The need to attract school, college, and university leavers is imperative in order to meet the demands of an aging care sector workforce.

Here at Acacia Training, we couldn’t agree more. We work with care companies across the UK to provide fully funded work-based learning programmes to people starting out in health and social care and early years care. Some are school or college leavers, while others want to retrain from their previous careers to a care career that is more personally rewarding.

Contact our partnerships team now to find out how we can help advertise, recruit and train your recruits to help develop your existing and new employees.

FREE Apprenticeship Levy Advice for the health and social care industry

The UK Government are to launch the Apprenticeship Levy by April 2017 to create more apprenticeship roles by 2020.

In order to do this the Government is implementing an Apprenticeship Levy which will be put in place by April 2017. It will be a fundamental change to the way Apprenticeships in England are funded.

Employers with a UK paybill of over £3m from both private and public sectors will be required to contribute 0.5% of that into a levy. The levy payment will then be transferred into an electronic voucher for which companies can buy apprenticeship training with. You’ll receive an allowance of £15,000 to offset your levy payment.

Are you in the health and social care industry? Are you unsure what Apprenticeship Levy means to you?

Here at Acacia Training we understand that the Apprenticeship Levy can be confusing and therefore we are offering a FREE 30 minute telephone appointment for the care industry with our health and social care training and funding expert, Julie Arrowsmith. She will be able to discuss the levy, the impact on your business and how Acacia Training can help.
