New apprentice roles for trainee carers

Local people are invited to apply for over 20 new apprenticeship vacancies on offer at care homes across the West Midlands.

Specialist learning provider Acacia Training is recruiting to the apprentice carer roles on behalf of care organisation HC-One, which operates dementia, nursing, residential and specialist care homes throughout the UK.

The new roles are available for trainees aged 18 or over who are hoping to start out in the care sector or to retrain for a career in health and social care. Successful applicants will join HC-One in Apprentice carer positions which will allow them to start work in a care home whilst studying a health and social care qualification with Acacia Training.

Positions are currently available in Burntwood, Dudley, Stafford and Coventry in the West Midlands region, in addition to a further 37 vacancies in the East Midlands.

Julie Arrowsmith is leading the recruitment at Acacia Training on behalf of HC-One in the midlands region. She comments: “We are very proud to have been appointed by HC-One to recruit and train the next generation of carers for their care homes in the Midlands region. HC-One is a fantastic, nationwide company that employs and trains committed staff to provide the very best care to care home residents.”

She adds: “HC-One offers an initial training allowance of £5 per hour in line with national set apprenticeship pay rates. They also offer career progression routes to the role of nursing assistant once the apprentice has successfully completed their training.”

Julie concludes: “We are inviting local residents to find out more and apply for the vacancies by visiting our carers vacancies page or emailing us at sales@acaciatraining.co.uk. At the moment there are around 50 vacancies in the East and West Midlands and we will be recruiting for even more vacancies in other care homes in the area soon.”

National Carers Week – Celebrating Amazing Carers!

It’s National Carers Week this week. There are some phenomenal people working in the care industry and we think they are all superstars!

59 year-old former police sergeant Keith Aldritt is a great example of someone with a real passion for providing high quality care. He retrained as a carer after retiring from a 30 year career in the police force. He has completed his NVQ level 2 with Acacia Training and is now studying his level 3 with us.

Keith thoroughly enjoys his job as a domiciliary carer with Home Instead Senior Care in Newcastle-under-Lyme, providing care and companionship to people in their own homes. Keith was named Home Instead’s Carer of the year last year – beating 8,000 other employees to the title.

As part of his caring role, Keith creates ‘life journals’ using his detective skills to research historical information about his clients’ lives and taking his clients back to visit places that were important in their lives.

What a great idea! Well done Keith, we’re so proud to have you as one of our learners!

Quality recognition for Acacia Training

Staffordshire-based Acacia Training has won national Skills for Care accreditation for the quality of its training.

The company operates from headquarters at Trentham business quarter and works with care homes, nurseries, pre-schools and social care companies throughout the UK.

Skills for Care accreditation was awarded after a rigorous assessment process aimed at ensuring that training delivered in the sector delivers higher standards of care as a result.

Other criteria that must be met include supporting excellence; having good processes in place and delivering courses to the care sector that are relevant and fit for purpose.

Managing Director Victoria Sylvester comments: “We are delighted that Acacia Training has been endorsed by Skills for Care as a high quality training provider for carers on subjects including autism, dementia, dignity, infection control, mental health, safeguarding, medicine, leadership and management and stroke awareness.”

She adds: “This adds to our recent ‘good’ grading from Ofsted and continues to recognise our expertise in the health and social care sector – with this particular accreditation demonstrating our excellence in adult social care.”

Our training is good, says Ofsted

We are celebrating after being awarded a ‘good’ grading by Ofsted inspectors for our specialist care training during a recent inspection.

The inspection was carried out in late January and the resulting report commended our  “highly flexible and responsive” approach to “meeting the needs of apprentices and employers in the care sector.”

Under the current inspection regime, training companies are inspected by Ofsted and allocated a grade between 1 and 4, with 1 being outstanding; 2 being good; 3 being ‘requires improvement;’ and 4 being ‘inadequate’.

Inspectors rated Acacia Training as ‘good’ with the resulting report concluding: “Apprentices develop good skills in health and social care and early years and playwork; they provide a good standard of care.”

Inspectors were also impressed with our understanding of employer needs within the care industry, stating: “Managers work well through their strong partnership links with employers, to identify skills shortages and offer accredited and specialist training programmes, such as palliative and end-of-life care.”

The report also states: “The curriculum meets the needs of apprentices, employers and the community very well. Leaders and managers have a good understanding of the employment and labour market needs of the health and social care, and early years and playwork sectors.”

Victoria Sylvester, Managing Director at Acacia Group, comments: “We are delighted with this recognition from Ofsted – it is testament to the hard work of all the team here and our assessors throughout the UK.”

She continues: “The report shows that our students progress well across all of our courses, and their success is reflected in the satisfaction levels of our employer clients.

Leaders at The Acacia Group also own and run two care homes – Samuel Hobson House in Wolstanton, and Mayfield House in Crewe. Bosses founded Acacia Training in 2001 because of the gaps they were facing in available training for their own care home employees.

Victoria explains: “Because we work so closely with employers and own two of our own care homes, our focus is on developing training in line with the sector needs and wants.”

In addition to work-based learning covered by the inspection, we also provide a range of short courses, specialist units and in company training including a new portfolio of e-learning courses thanks to a recent partnership with CareShield UK.

Inspectors suggested a small number of areas for development, such as boosting apprentices’ ability to set their own learning targets, and increasing employer involvement in planning and reviewing learning at progress reviews.
